Showing, Telling, Reading, Watching
Yikes! Two months since my last post. Too much thinking and not enough writing! As I'm rewriting my rewritten Chapter One, I'm definitely seeing a case for why showing (and using dialogue as much as possible to move a scene forward) has become more popular. It reads like television.
I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad one. Maybe it's a mix of both. No question that it drives the characters more but somehow it removes a sense of storytelling in the old fashioned sense of the word - an ability to ask the reader to allow their mind to be a blank canvas upon which, through telling, you paint the background of a picture.
Jury is still out.
